White Ocean | Mixed media

Climate change, rising sea temperatures, and excess sediment runoff from construction sites have caused Green Island’s stony coral to turn white with pink, pink-orange, pink-green, and pink-blue at the tips. Despite the “beauty,” it is a sign that the coral polyps and algae, which live symbiotically, are dying. Inspired by this, LIN spent an extensive amount of time creating a twisting geometric framework with takeout meal bags, presenting coral’s closely knit relationship with the sea. Light and projected imagery make it glow brilliantly to show that what humans mistake for beauty is actually a harbinger of death.
