Hunga Tonga navigates dreamscapes of the earth, sea, and space in exploring the connections between humans, microorganisms, and the newly formed South-Pacific volcanic island Hunga Tonga. A huge volcanic eruption ten years ago brought Hunga Tonga to the surface from the depths of the ocean. Being a young island, it exists as a porous interface between land and sea, rapidly evolving as it adjusts to its new life above water. Challenging human conceptions of time, narratives, and the boundaries between species, the film visualizes various alien states of embodiment and invites viewers to experience time as if they were volcanic islands, ancient microorganisms, or the ocean. As the island will tell you itself, nature is not static. No island exists outside the influence of time.

Having continuously worked with a wide variety of collaborators, their art makes use of energy systems, copies, contracts, public spaces, etc. They have been developing a new kind of urbanism that includes the perspectives of plants and animals, aiming to move society towards “interspecies living.” For SUPERFLEX, the best idea might just come from a fish.
