Biosignal_Cradle 生物信號_源地| 裝置

Biosignal Cradle  | Installation

Cradle represents the ecosystem’s water sources and the potential use of cyborgs in reproduction. In the early stages of evolution, before plants had microtubules, moss required an abundance of moisture to survive and propagate.  Here, it serves as the humidity metric to ensure a cyborg can survive. When an electric current passes through the bio-resistor attached to the moss, a database algorithm receives the signals and calculates the humidity. While data is being collected, the vibration caused by the electric current makes a noise which resembles insects buzzing and birds tweeting. It thus makes audibly perceivable the invisible process of the next generation’s propagation.

Y2K is the artist duo of Chou Chiao-chi and Hu You-yang, both born on the cusp of the Y2K digital crisis but who grew up with completely different backgrounds. Together they formed Y2K and launched the experimental series Biosignal in 2018, using science and computing to create forms that mimic biological responses. In their art, they hold to the principles of listening, enhancing, and respecting the desire to live. By putting aside authority, they allow their work to be subjective. In 2019, they applied phototropism and apogeogeotropism in creating Biosignal Cybernation, which was invited to show at Ars Electronica. In 2022, they began their series Lichtung, which dissects the transmission and interaction of energy among matter, information, and organisms as a response to the artists’ questions about being.
